Legacy modernisation checkpoints

Checkpoint 01

Runtime inventory

Map languages, schedulers, integration buses, and shadow IT scripts that touch the same data store. We document what actually runs in production, not what the architecture slide deck claims.

Checkpoint 02

Strangler boundaries

Identify seams where read models, APIs, or message queues can peel off risk without a big-bang rewrite. Each boundary gets a test harness and rollback path before code moves.

Checkpoint 03

Data parity proofs

Compare legacy outputs to replacement services using sampled transactions, not eyeball checks. We keep checksum reports you can hand to auditors or internal risk teams.

How engagements are structured

Paid programming consulting delivered as scoped project work and ongoing technical advisory — not a subscription platform or packaged SaaS.

  • Discovery sprint — fixed-scope review of repositories, deployment pipelines, and operational runbooks for one legacy system or bounded subsystem.
  • Modernisation programme — milestone-based delivery (API extraction, database decomposition, automated regression suites) with written acceptance criteria per milestone.
  • Technical advisory retainer — monthly hours for architecture reviews, vendor RFP scrutiny, and pairing with your in-house team during cutover weekends.

Milestone invoices follow written acceptance criteria in each statement of work. See services for characteristic deliverables and pricing approach.

We modernise legacy applications by proving each increment in production-like conditions — not by declaring victory when a greenfield service compiles. Vector Gateway Consulting — programming advisory for regulated and operations-heavy stacks

Pre-engagement checklist

Before we sign a statement of work, confirm you can provide or arrange access to the items below. Missing pieces do not disqualify you — they define what the discovery sprint must cover first.

Source and build artifacts — version control or offline archives, plus the compiler/runtime versions used in production builds.
Interface contracts — flat files, MQ topics, stored procedures, or partner SFTP layouts that downstream teams still depend on.
Operational contacts — people who approve maintenance windows, not only product owners.
Non-functional constraints — latency ceilings, residency rules, and audit logging expectations tied to Malaysian operations.

Questions teams ask before modernising

Do you replace our entire legacy stack in one release?

No. We sequence strangler-style increments so billing, inventory, or policy engines keep running while bounded slices move to new services. Big-bang replatforming is only discussed when you explicitly accept the operational risk and have a parallel run budget.

Can you work with mainframe or midrange systems common in Malaysian enterprises?

Yes, when access and test data can be provided under your security rules. We have paired with teams running COBOL, RPG, and older Java EE monoliths connected to on-prem Oracle or DB2 instances — always documenting parity tests before cutover.

What does a typical first project look like?

A two-to-four week discovery sprint producing a risk-ranked backlog, interface map, and recommended milestone plan. You may stop after the sprint; there is no automatic rollover into implementation unless you approve the next statement of work.

Where is work performed?

Hybrid: workshops at Kuala Lumpur and secure remote pairing. On-site time is scheduled for cutover support when your runbook requires physical presence in the data hall or operations floor.
